As Within, So Without is a new screendance film by When Time Was New, a Hip Hop Theatre Company led by Artistic Director & Choreographer Brooke Milliner. The film was commissioned by Coventry University as part of a research-led exploration into ownership and choreography in digital space. Drawing inspiration from the Cherokee legend of the two wolves – symbols of the inner battle between light and shadow – the film translates this timeless parable into visceral Hip Hop movement, sharp musicality and striking visual worlds. Created as one of three commissioned works, the piece follows a dancer’s embodied struggle as the “wolves within” rise, clash and transform. As the university’s research team observed the creative process, As Within, So Without became both an artistic and academic study – revealing how inner conflict is shaped, shared and reimagined through digital dance.
