In reality, both legally and practically, few individuals actually control the digital reproductions of their physical or vocal likeness. This issue has become a flashpoint in the creative industries, as illustrated by the past and present strike action led by the US actors’ union SAG-AFTRA. At its core, the dispute reflects deep disagreements between artists, employers, technology developers and users over who holds the rights to digital replicas – another expression for ‘digital clone’ – and their benefits.
